 RSE/PSHE Policy – Action 2 Change

Physical Health

Learning about physical health at Action2Change includes food choices, physical activity, balanced lifestyles, drugs and alcohol education, first aid, sleep, dental health and more.

Mental Health

At Action2Change, we support your pupils to stay healthy and safe while equipping them to help others. Mental health issues include stress, anxiety and depression. There are lots of causes of mental health issues and many things we can all do to look after our mental health.

Growing and Changing

Action 2 Change supports pupils and helps them to understand and manage the physical and emotional changes that may happen during puberty.

Personal Safety

At Action2Change, PSHE education helps children and young people to stay safe – online and offline. This is something that we actively encourage to be vigilant and keep safe.

Relationships and Sex Education

Relationships Education will build positive foundations for healthy and safe relationships of all kinds. This will start with family and friends, how to be kind, and exploring online friendships.

This includes learning about respectful relationships, families, contraception and parenthood, understanding consent, staying safe online, recognising unhealthy or abusive behaviours, and healthy intimate and sexual relationships.

Bullying and Discrimination

These issues are complex and need and at Action2Change we use behavioural intervention talks to contribute to the PSHE education curriculum. The behavioural and deterrence talks play a vital part of the PSHE learning at A2C.

Learning about different types of bullying (including online) is covered at A2C. This includes the impact of bullying, responsibilities of bystanders to report bullying and how and where to get help.

Media and Digital Literacy

At Action2Change, we support children and young people to assess if information is trustworthy and to recognise misleading narratives. We use group discussion and real-life scenarios to engage the students in debates and make them actively think about the media that they are engaging in.

Money and Careers

PSHE education fosters economic wellbeing and supports positive career choices. Helping young people to understand their feelings about money, financial decisions, careers and the economy is a vital part of preparing them for adult life, with clear links to health outcomes and relationships.

At Action2Change, we cover a variety of career talks in intervention lessons. Money is covered through different scenarios in lessons and also covered in Maths.

Community and Responsibility

At Action2Chnge, cover community and responsibility within the ‘Living in the Wider World’. This includes learning about the different roles and responsibilities people have within their community. It is also important to teach about the benefits of living in a diverse community and strategies for challenging stereotypes and prejudice.

Well-Being

Well-being is at the centre of the values and at Action2Change this is fundamental to our centre values. We believe that all children should identify and help others take responsibility for their well-being.

Curriculum Intent

PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. At Action2Change, we provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to become critical thinkers and develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We provide real-life scenarios that engage students in debates and problem solving.

Curriculum Implementation

PSHE is integral to the development of children’s values in order for them to become a positive citizen in a forever changing community. The curriculum complies with the statutory guidance for Relationships and Sex Education. The delivered curriculum reflects the needs of our pupils and is tailored to meet specific needs. We expect teachers and staff to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

We strongly believe that PSHE plays a vital part in our students’ education therefore the values are taught or discussed weekly. In addition to this, there are also opportunities to make cross curricular links. There also may be occasions where staff may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue which has arisen in their own class. As a centre (Action2Change), PSHE is an important part of discussions, where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured. We deliver the PSHE curriculum by sharing good practice and it is every staff member’s responsibility to do this by being a role model and having high expectations of our pupils.

The curriculum is split into three core themes of: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. Work will be recorded in books and on worksheets as we move through each strand of our PSHE curriculum.

Impact

At Action2Change, we aim to prepare children for life, helping them to really know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world. We hope that through the teaching of the different threads in the PSHE and RSE curriculum, children will learn strategies to help them stay safe and healthy and be able to manage their personal and social lives in a positive way. Key areas are revisited so children can gain a good understanding of how to be healthy, how to create respectful relationships and how to look after their mental wellbeing. PSHE teaching, along with our lesson interventions, develops the children’s understanding of Accountability, Self Confidence, Perseverance, Integrity, Respect and Empathy.
